Tax audits, things you can do to avoid them

No one wants to get audited. Few people actually do. Those Connecticut residents who are chosen for tax audits may find the experience unnerving, but with help, they can get through it. While audits might be rare, there is no harm in taking a few steps to avoid being subjected to one.

Step number one: Check, check and check again. Make sure all numbers are correct, dependents are listed and exemptions are in order. Clerical errors are a good way to end up on the audit list.

Step number two: Take time to consider deductions and credits. Not everyone can itemize deductions or take certain credits, but those who can would be wise to take the time to really think about what they are claiming. Deductions and credits that seem over the top are likely to get flagged for an audit.

Step number three: Be honest. No one wants to pay more in taxes than they have to, but lying to lower one's tax liability is a sure way to get audited. It is also a crime.

While avoiding tax audits is the goal, at some point, it may be something one has to go through. Connecticut residents who end up getting audit notices in the mail do not have to go through the process alone. If an audit occurs in person, legal counsel can be at one's side throughout the entire thing. If an audit is done via mail, an experienced tax attorney can walk one through the process and tackle any issues that may arise. If the audit results are not ideal, legal counsel can also help one appeal, if doing so is desired.
