New year, new sales tax laws

It's a new year, and that means the state of Connecticut has new laws that have gone into effect. For instance, changes were made to sales tax laws. These adjustments could hurt some people if they fail to pay or collect sales tax properly. What are these changes?

According to a recently published article, fewer modifications to sales tax laws were made than intended initially; however, those that were made may be a big deal to some. As it now stands, certain items that were exempt from sales tax in 2019 no longer are. Some of those items include:

  • Dry cleaning
  • Parking
  • Design services

A few other adjustments to tax laws were made, but these changes went into effect before the end of 2019. The changes include the collection and payment of sales tax on digital purchases, e-cigarettes, alcohol and prepared meals -- among others. Failure to collect the right amount or pay the proper amount based on new sales tax laws could result in one being audited.

Sales tax can be a challenging thing to figure out. There are different rates for different items, and the rates and list of taxable items are continually changing. Connecticut residents who have questions about sales tax laws or who think they may have made some mistakes in the collection or payment of sales tax can turn to an experienced tax attorney for guidance. Questions can be answered, and with the right help, any potential issues can be tackled and resolved in a timely manner.
